Privacy Policy
1. Introduction
Matio is a math learning app for children ages 4–8, built around Mat (math) and Learn · Solve · Grow. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and protect information when you or your child uses the Matio mobile application (iOS and Android), this website, and related services (together, the “Services”).
We designed Matio with families and classrooms in mind. We collect only what we need to run the app, support learning progress, and improve the experience. We do not sell personal information, and we do not display third-party advertising to children within the app. This policy complies with the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), Apple App Store guidelines, Google Play policies, and other applicable privacy laws.
By using the Services, you agree to this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Services.
2. Who we are
Matio is operated by the team responsible for developing and publishing the Matio application. For privacy-related questions, requests, or complaints, contact us at support@matio.app.
This website (Matio landing pages) may be hosted on standard web hosting or cloud infrastructure. The mobile app may store data locally on your device and, where enabled, sync limited account or progress data through secure backend services.
3. Children and parental consent
Matio is intended for use by children under the supervision of a parent, guardian, or authorized educator. We comply with applicable children’s privacy laws, including the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) where it applies, and similar frameworks in other regions.
What we expect from adults
- A parent, guardian, or school official should set up and manage use of Matio for children who cannot provide meaningful consent on their own.
- Profile names, avatars, and progress are meant for learning purposes inside the app—not for public social networking.
- We do not knowingly collect more personal information from a child than is reasonably necessary to participate in the educational activities offered by Matio.
Parental rights
Parents and guardians may review, correct, or request deletion of a child’s information associated with a profile, subject to technical and legal limits. See Section 10 and Section 13 for how to contact us.
If you believe we have collected information from a child without appropriate consent, email support@matio.app and we will take steps to delete it promptly.
4. Information we collect
The information we collect depends on how you use Matio. We group it as follows:
4.1 Information you provide
- Learner profiles: display name or nickname, optional avatar or character choice, and language preference.
- Learning progress: games played, categories visited, difficulty levels selected, scores, completion status, and in-app achievements or streaks stored to support continuity across sessions.
- Support communications: if you email us, we receive your email address, message content, and any information you choose to include.
- Subscription information: account email (if provided), subscription status, and purchase history (handled through App Store).
We do not require a child’s full legal name, home address, phone number, or email address to use core learning features.
4.2 Information collected automatically
- Device and app data: device type, operating system version, app version, language settings, and general performance or crash logs to keep Matio stable.
- Usage data: aggregated or pseudonymous analytics such as session length, feature usage, and error events—used to understand which activities work well and to fix bugs.
- Website data: if you visit this marketing site, we may collect standard server logs (IP address, browser type, pages viewed) and, if we enable cookies in the future, cookie preferences as described at that time.
- Advertising identifiers: Apple's IDFA or Google's AAID (only where you or your device settings allow).
4.3 Information we do not collect
- Precise geolocation tracking for advertising purposes.
- Contacts, photos, microphone, or camera access unless a specific feature clearly requires it and you grant permission in the app (most Matio games do not require these).
- Payment card details within the child-facing experience (handled by App Store).
- Behavioral data for targeting advertisements to children.
4.4 Purchases and subscriptions
If we offer paid features, subscriptions, or in-app purchases, payment processing will be handled by Apple App Store, Google Play, or another authorized payment provider. We receive confirmation of purchase status, subscription type, renewal dates, and account verification data—but not your full payment credentials. Apple and Google handle all payment processing securely.
5. How we use information
We use information to:
- Deliver and personalize math learning activities across eight learning paths (e.g., counting, shapes, addition, patterns).
- Remember profiles, difficulty settings, and progress between sessions.
- Operate, maintain, secure, and improve the app and website.
- Respond to support requests and communicate important service updates.
- Comply with law, enforce our Terms & Conditions, and protect users and our rights.
- Produce aggregated, de-identified statistics that do not identify individual children.
We do not use children’s personal information for behavioral advertising. We do not profile children for marketing to third parties. We do not share personal data with advertisers.
6. Analytics and tracking
To improve Matio and understand how users interact with our content, we may collect aggregated and pseudonymous usage analytics through first-party and third-party analytics tools. Analytics data collected may include:
- Session duration and frequency of app usage.
- Which games or learning paths are accessed most often.
- Technical performance metrics and error logs.
- Device, operating system, and app version information.
- Feature adoption and engagement patterns (aggregated only, not tied to individual children).
Analytics tools and providers
We may use analytics providers such as Firebase Crashlytics, Firebase Analytics, Amplitude, or similar services. These tools operate under their own privacy policies. We have configured these services to minimize collection of personally identifiable information from children and to use aggregated data only. Links to key provider privacy policies:
- Google Firebase: firebase.google.com/support/privacy
- Google Privacy Policy: policies.google.com/privacy
Opting out of analytics
On iOS, users and guardians can limit ad tracking and analytics collection through the device's privacy settings:
- Settings > Privacy > Apple Advertising > Limit Ad Tracking
- Settings > Privacy > Tracking > Allow Apps to Request to Track (toggle off)
On Android, you can manage ad personalization in your Google Account settings. Many analytics services also support opt-out mechanisms; contact us if you wish to opt out of optional analytics collection.
No behavioral advertising
We do not use analytics data to build behavioral profiles of children or to target advertising to them within the app. Any links to external websites or ads shown to adults are managed separately from child analytics. We do not use IDFA or Android Advertising ID to target children with ads.
7. Third-party services
Matio may integrate or rely on third-party services and platforms:
Infrastructure and hosting
- Cloud hosting providers (e.g., AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure) for backend infrastructure.
- Content delivery networks (CDNs) for efficient app and website delivery.
Analytics and crash reporting
- Firebase (Crashlytics, Analytics) for performance monitoring and debugging.
- Other analytics platforms for usage insights.
Payment and subscription processing
- Apple App Store for iOS subscriptions and in-app purchases.
- Google Play for Android subscriptions and in-app purchases.
- These platforms handle all payment card information; we do not receive or store payment credentials.
Communication and support
- Email services for support communications and account notifications.
- Help desk or ticketing systems for support request tracking.
Third-party privacy policies
Each third-party service has its own privacy policy and terms. We recommend reviewing their policies, particularly:
- Firebase: firebase.google.com/support/privacy
- Apple App Store: apple.com/privacy
- Google Play: play.google.com/about/play-terms
We are not responsible for third-party practices we do not control, though we have chosen partners that protect children's information.
8. How we share information
We may share information only in these situations:
- Service providers: trusted vendors who help us host infrastructure, analyze crashes, or provide customer support, bound by confidentiality and data-processing obligations.
- Payment processors: Apple, Google, and other app store operators receive purchase and subscription information needed to process transactions.
- Legal requirements: when required by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request, or to protect the safety of users and others.
- Business transfers: if Matio is involved in a merger, acquisition, or asset sale, information may transfer as part of that transaction with notice where required by law.
- With your direction: when you explicitly agree or request a share (for example, exporting progress for a school report if we offer that feature).
We do not sell or rent personal information to advertisers or marketers.
9. Storage, retention, and security
Where data is stored
Data may be stored on your device (local storage) and, when account or sync features are enabled, on servers operated by us or our hosting partners. Those servers may be located in countries other than where you live.
Data retention
We retain information based on the purpose for which it was collected:
- Learning progress and profiles: retained while the profile is active and for a reasonable period (up to 24 months) after the last app activity, unless you request deletion sooner.
- Support communications: retained for up to 3 years to resolve disputes or fulfill legal obligations.
- Analytics data: aggregated analytics are typically retained indefinitely; individual session logs are retained for 30–90 days.
- Subscription and billing information: retained as required by law and for tax/accounting purposes (typically 7 years for U.S. residents).
- Crash reports and error logs: retained for up to 90 days to identify and fix bugs.
Upon account or profile deletion, we remove associated learning progress and personal profile details but may retain de-identified or aggregated data for analytics.
Security measures
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational security measures designed to protect personal information against unauthorized access, alteration, and destruction:
- Encryption of data in transit using HTTPS/TLS on web and secure protocols in the mobile app.
- Encryption of sensitive data at rest where applicable.
- Secure authentication and access controls for backend systems.
- Regular security assessments and vulnerability management.
- Restricted access to personal information on a need-to-know basis.
- Staff training on data protection and privacy practices.
- Secure deletion of data when no longer needed.
No method of transmission or storage is absolutely secure; we cannot guarantee 100% security. If you discover a security vulnerability, please report it to support@matio.app.
10. Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to:
- Access personal information we hold about you or your child’s profile.
- Correct inaccurate information.
- Request deletion of information, subject to legal exceptions.
- Object to or restrict certain processing.
- Withdraw consent where processing is consent-based.
- Lodge a complaint with a data protection authority.
- Data portability (in certain jurisdictions).
To exercise these rights, email support@matio.app with enough detail for us to verify your relationship to the account or profile. We will respond within the timeframes required by applicable law (typically 30 days).
Device permissions
You can manage app permissions through your device settings (e.g., notifications, camera, microphone, location). Uninstalling Matio removes locally stored app data from that device, though backup or synced copies may persist until deleted from our systems.
Managing subscriptions
To manage, cancel, or modify your auto-renewable subscription:
- iPhone/iPad: Settings > [Your Name] > Subscriptions > Select "Matio" > Manage or Cancel
- Android: Google Play Store app > Profile icon > Manage subscriptions > Select "Matio" > Manage or Cancel
11. International users
Matio is available in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, and Mandarin. If you access the Services from outside your home country, your information may be processed in jurisdictions with different data-protection laws. Where required by law (such as GDPR, LGPD, or other regulations), we implement appropriate safeguards for cross-border transfers, including Standard Contractual Clauses or other legally recognized mechanisms.
If you are located in the European Economic Area, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority if you believe your rights have been violated.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will post the updated policy on this page with a new “Last updated” date and, where appropriate, provide additional notice in the app or by email. Continued use of the Services after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the revised policy, unless otherwise required by law.
